The Diners Club Black Metal Edition sits at the top of HDFC Bank’s consumer range, next to Infinia. It costs ₹10,000 plus GST to take and the same again every year, and HDFC waives that renewal fee only if you put ₹8 lakh through the card in 12 months. In return you get unlimited airport lounge access for yourself and every add-on holder, six golf games a quarter, and a Reward Point worth a full rupee when you spend it on SmartBuy flights and hotels. This review works through what the card actually earns, where HDFC caps it, and the spending level below which the metal is not worth carrying.
Rewards & Benefits
Reward rate and earn structure
| Spend category | Earn rate | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday spends | 5 Reward Points per ₹150 | 75,000 Reward Points per statement cycle, across everything |
| Weekend dining at standalone restaurants | 10 Reward Points per ₹150 (2X) | Saturday and Sunday only, minimum ₹150 per transaction |
| Hotels booked on SmartBuy | Up to 10X Reward Points | Counts towards the same 75,000 statement cycle ceiling |
| Flights booked on SmartBuy | Up to 5X Reward Points | Counts towards the same 75,000 statement cycle ceiling |
| Grocery, utility and telecom | Standard rate | 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month, each |
| Insurance premiums | Standard rate | 5,000 Reward Points per calendar month |
| Fuel, rent, government, wallet loading, Smart EMI | Nil | These spends earn no Reward Points at all |
Points accrue in multiples of ₹150, so a ₹280 restaurant bill earns on ₹150 and the remaining ₹130 earns nothing. The 2X weekend dining rate is narrower than the marketing line suggests: HDFC restricts it to standalone restaurants carrying merchant category codes 5812, 5813 and 5814, to transactions settled on a Saturday or Sunday, and it excludes wallet payments and EMI conversions. Across every category combined, HDFC caps what the card can earn at 75,000 Reward Points in a statement cycle.
Redemption and what a point is worth
| Redeemed as | Value of 1 Reward Point |
|---|---|
| SmartBuy flight and hotel bookings | ₹1 |
| Airmiles conversion | Up to 1.0 airmile |
| Products and vouchers | Up to ₹0.50 |
| Statement cashback | Up to ₹0.30 |
Here is the arithmetic that matters. At 5 points per ₹150 and ₹1 a point, ordinary spending returns 3.3% when you burn the points on SmartBuy travel. Take the same ₹150 to a SmartBuy hotel booking at 10X and it earns 50 points, which is ₹50 back on ₹150. Redeem those points as statement cashback instead and the ₹1 becomes ₹0.30, so the card is worth roughly a third as much to anyone who does not book travel through SmartBuy. Points can cover at most 70% of a flight or hotel booking, redemption is capped at 75,000 points a calendar month for travel and 50,000 for cashback, and points expire three years after they are earned. Unlike most HDFC cards, this one carries no ₹99 redemption fee.
Welcome and milestone benefits
| Benefit | What you have to spend |
|---|---|
| Annual memberships of Club Marriott, Amazon Prime and Swiggy One | ₹1,50,000 of net retail spends within 90 days of card issuance |
| 10,000 bonus Reward Points | ₹4,00,000 in a calendar quarter |
| Renewal fee waived for the next year | ₹8,00,000 in 12 months |
The quarterly milestone is what decides whether this card pays for itself. ₹4 lakh a quarter is ₹16 lakh a year, and clearing it all four times gives you 40,000 bonus points, worth ₹40,000 on SmartBuy travel against an ₹11,800 fee. Miss it and the card is just a 3.3% earner with a large annual bill. EMI principal, EMI interest and wallet loading do not count towards either the welcome spend or the quarterly milestone, and refunds are deducted from your running total.
Lounge access, golf and insurance
| Benefit | Allowance |
|---|---|
| Domestic lounge visits | Unlimited, primary and add-on cardholders |
| International lounge visits | Unlimited, primary and add-on cardholders |
| Network size | 1,300+ lounges in India and worldwide |
| Golf | 6 complimentary games every calendar quarter |
| Air accident cover | ₹2 crore |
| Emergency overseas hospitalisation | ₹50 lakh |
| International baggage delay beyond 8 hours | Up to ₹55,000, capped at $10 per hour |
| Credit liability cover | Up to ₹9 lakh |
Unlimited is the real headline. Most Indian premium cards ration lounge visits by the quarter, and this one does not, for either the primary card or the add-ons, which are lifetime free. The catch is the network. Diners Club acceptance in India is thinner than Visa or Mastercard, so you will want a second card in the wallet for the merchants that turn it away.

| Foreign currency markup | 2% on all foreign currency spends |

| Add-on cards | Lifetime free |
| Minimum amount due | 5% of the outstanding or ₹200, whichever is higher |
| Interest free period | Up to 50 days from the date of purchase |
Hitting the waiver means ₹8 lakh over 12 months, about ₹66,700 a month, and cash withdrawals, balance transfers and Cash on Call do not count towards it. Worth noticing: the plastic Diners Club Black carries the same ₹10,000 fee but waives at ₹5 lakh. You are paying identical money for a harder threshold and a metal card, so the metal edition only makes sense if you were going to clear ₹8 lakh anyway.
The charge that catches people here is fuel. This card has no fuel surcharge waiver at all, it earns no Reward Points on fuel, and HDFC adds a 1% fee on any single fuel transaction above ₹15,000, capped at ₹4,999. The same 1% applies to rent payments, to utility spends above ₹50,000 in a calendar month, to wallet loading above ₹10,000 a month and to education paid through third party apps such as CRED. None of those spends earn points either, so putting them on this card costs you twice.
Eligibility & Documents Required
| Profile | HDFC Bank’s stated criteria |
|---|---|
| Salaried | Indian national, aged 21 to 60, net monthly income above ₹2.5 lakh |
| Self employed | Indian national, aged 21 to 65, net annual income above ₹30 lakh |
Both profiles land in the same place, roughly ₹30 lakh a year. Documents are the standard set. PAN plus one of passport, Aadhaar, voter ID or driving licence for identity; a utility bill, rent agreement, passport or Aadhaar for address; and salary slips, Form 16 or bank statements if you are salaried, income tax returns if you are self employed. Approval remains at HDFC Bank’s discretion, and meeting the income bar does not guarantee it.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Unlimited domestic and international lounge access, for add-on holders too | ₹8 lakh waiver threshold, against ₹5 lakh on the plastic Diners Club Black at the same fee |
| 3.3% base return, rising to 33% on SmartBuy hotels at 10X | No fuel surcharge waiver, no points on fuel, and a 1% fee above ₹15,000 |
| 10,000 bonus points every quarter you spend ₹4 lakh | Diners Club acceptance in India is thinner than Visa or Mastercard |
| No ₹99 redemption fee, unlike most HDFC cards | Earning stops at 75,000 Reward Points per statement cycle |
| Six complimentary golf games a quarter | ₹3,500 to replace the card if it is lost or damaged |
Diners Club Black Metal vs Competitors
| Card | Annual fee | Fee waiver | Network |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC Diners Club Black Metal Edition | ₹10,000 + GST | ₹8 lakh | Diners Club |
| HDFC Diners Club Black | ₹10,000 + GST | ₹5 lakh | Diners Club |
| HDFC Infinia Metal Edition | ₹12,500 + GST | ₹10 lakh | Visa |
The honest comparison sits inside HDFC’s own range. The plastic Diners Club Black costs the same and waives at ₹5 lakh instead of ₹8 lakh, so the metal edition buys you the card itself and a higher spend bar rather than a better reward table. Infinia Metal costs ₹2,500 more and asks ₹10 lakh for its waiver, but runs on Visa, which removes the acceptance problem the Diners Club network creates. Outside HDFC, the closest premium rival on lounge access is the Aurum SBI Card.
How to Apply
Four routes are open. Apply on the HDFC Bank website from the card’s product page, apply inside the PayZapp app from the credit card section, log in to NetBanking and apply from the Cards tab if you already bank with HDFC, or walk into a branch. The online journey runs in three steps: confirm your mobile number and PAN or date of birth, confirm your details, then pick the card and submit. Some applications also need document upload and a video KYC call before the card is issued.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Diners Club Black Metal Edition annual fee waived?
Yes, on ₹8,00,000 of spending in the 12 months before your renewal date. Cash withdrawals, balance transfers and Cash on Call are excluded from that total. Miss it and you pay ₹10,000 plus GST, or ₹11,800.
How many lounge visits does the card give?
Unlimited, at over 1,300 lounges in India and abroad, and the same allowance extends to add-on cardholders. HDFC publishes the domestic list on its site and the international list through the Diners Travel Tool app.
What is the minimum salary for the Diners Club Black Metal Edition?
Net monthly income above ₹2.5 lakh if you are salaried, or net annual income above ₹30 lakh if you are self employed. Salaried applicants must be 21 to 60 and self employed applicants 21 to 65.
What is one Reward Point worth?
₹1 on SmartBuy flight and hotel bookings, up to 1.0 airmile on conversion, up to ₹0.50 on products and vouchers, and up to ₹0.30 as statement cashback. Points cover at most 70% of a travel booking.
Does the card give a fuel surcharge waiver?
No. HDFC lists the fuel surcharge waiver as not applicable on this card, fuel spends earn no Reward Points, and a 1% fee applies to any single fuel transaction above ₹15,000.
How many Reward Points can I earn in a month?
Earning stops at 75,000 Reward Points per statement cycle across all categories. Grocery, utility and telecom are separately capped at 2,000 points a month each, and insurance at 5,000 points a month.
What does it cost to replace the card?
₹3,500, which is HDFC’s metal card rate for a lost, stolen or damaged card. Non metal HDFC cards are replaced for ₹199.
Bottom Line
Get this card if you spend ₹16 lakh a year or more, book flights and hotels through SmartBuy, and fly often enough that unlimited lounge access for you and your family is worth real money. At that level the four quarterly milestones alone return 40,000 points, or ₹40,000 of travel, against an ₹11,800 fee, and the card pays for itself several times over.
Skip it if your annual spending sits below ₹8 lakh, because you will pay ₹11,800 every year for a 3.3% return available more cheaply elsewhere. Skip it too if you drive a lot, since fuel earns nothing here and carries a 1% fee above ₹15,000, and skip it if you are unwilling to carry a Visa or Mastercard alongside for the merchants that do not take Diners Club. If you want the same rewards with a softer waiver, the plastic Diners Club Black is the better buy at the same fee.
