At a Glance
| Joining Fee | ₹10,000 + GST (₹11,800 all-in) |
| Annual Fee | ₹10,000 + GST, waived on annual spends of ₹5 lakh |
| Best Suited For | Frequent flyers spending ₹5 lakh a year who want unlimited lounge access |
| Reward Type | HDFC Reward Points, redeemed on SmartBuy or NetBanking |
One line separates this card from almost everything else in India: unlimited airport lounge access at more than 1,300 lounges, for the primary cardholder and add-on members too. Nearly every rival counts your visits and cuts you off after eight or twelve. This one does not count at all, and it extends the same privilege to your spouse or parent on an add-on card. Around that sit six golf games a quarter, a 2% forex markup, and a fee that disappears entirely at ₹5 lakh of annual spending. It is expensive, and for the right traveller it is not expensive at all.
Rewards & Benefits
Reward rate and earn structure
| Spend category | Earn rate | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| All eligible spends | 5 Reward Points per ₹150 | None published |
| Hotel and flight bookings on SmartBuy | Up to 10X Reward Points | None published on the product page |
| Swiggy and Zomato | 5X Reward Points | None published |
| Weekend dining at participating restaurants | 2X Reward Points | None published |
The ₹150 denominator is worth noticing. Rewards accrue per full ₹150 spent, so a ₹140 transaction earns nothing and the remainder on a ₹290 spend is discarded. Use the card for larger purchases and the rounding stops mattering.
Redemption and what a point is worth
Points are redeemed through SmartBuy or NetBanking. HDFC does not publish a fixed rupee value per Reward Point on this product page, and the value varies by redemption route, so treat any single figure quoted elsewhere with caution. What HDFC does state clearly is the ceiling: on flight and hotel bookings, Reward Points can cover a maximum of 70% of the booking value, and the remaining 30% must be paid on the card. Plan around that limit, because it means points alone will never pay for a trip outright.
Lounge access and golf
| Airport lounge access | Unlimited, at 1,300+ lounges in India and abroad |
| Who is covered | Primary and add-on cardholders |
| Golf | 6 complimentary games every quarter, at courses worldwide |
| Entertainment | Buy One Get One Free through BookMyShow |
Unlimited access extended to add-on members is the single most valuable line on this card, and it is rare enough to be the reason most people hold it. A couple travelling together are both covered on one membership. HDFC directs cardholders to the Diners Travel Tool app for the full international lounge list, which is worth checking before you travel because Diners Club acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard in some countries.
Milestone benefits and fee waiver
| Benefit | Requirement |
|---|---|
| 2 vouchers worth ₹500 each, from Tata Cliq, Uber, BookMyShow or Cult Fit | ₹80,000 of quarterly spend |
| Renewal fee waiver, worth ₹11,800 | ₹5,00,000 of annual spend |
The quarterly milestone at ₹80,000 works out to about ₹26,700 a month and returns ₹1,000 in vouchers each quarter, so ₹4,000 across the year. The fee waiver at ₹5 lakh is the one that really matters, and it needs roughly ₹41,700 a month.
Fees & Charges
| Joining fee | ₹10,000 + applicable taxes |
| All-in first year cost | ₹11,800 |
| Renewal fee, per annum | ₹10,000 + applicable taxes |
| Spend needed for fee waiver | ₹5,00,000 in the year |
| Foreign currency markup | 2% on all foreign currency spends |
GST of 18% takes the real cost to ₹11,800. The 2% forex markup deserves as much attention as the fee, because most Indian credit cards charge 3.5%. On ₹5,00,000 of international spending, 2% costs ₹10,000 against ₹17,500 at the usual rate. That ₹7,500 saving covers most of the annual fee by itself, and it is the quiet reason this card suits people who travel rather than people who merely want a premium card.
The thing that catches people out is Diners Club acceptance. The network is accepted at far fewer merchants than Visa or Mastercard, particularly outside large Indian cities and in several countries abroad. HDFC bills foreign currency transactions on the statement within 60 days of the visit, so charges can appear later than you expect. Interest rates, cash advance fees and late payment slabs are set out in HDFC’s fees and charges page for this card.
Eligibility & Documents Required
HDFC publishes a separate eligibility page for this card rather than an income figure on the product page, and approval is decided on your income and credit profile. As a super premium product, expect the underwriting to be considerably stricter than on HDFC’s entry range, and an existing banking relationship helps. Keep ready your PAN, proof of identity, proof of current address, and either recent salary slips or the last two years of income tax returns if you are self-employed.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Unlimited lounge access at 1,300+ lounges, add-on members included | Diners Club acceptance is narrower than Visa or Mastercard |
| 2% forex markup against the usual 3.5% | ₹11,800 a year unless you spend ₹5 lakh |
| 6 complimentary golf games every quarter | Points cover only 70% of a flight or hotel booking |
| Fee waived entirely at ₹5 lakh of annual spend | Rewards accrue per ₹150, so small spends round down |
Diners Club Black vs Competitors
| Card | Annual fee | Lounge access |
|---|---|---|
| HDFC Diners Club Black | ₹10,000, waived at ₹5 lakh | Unlimited, primary and add-on |
| AURUM SBI Card | Charged annually | Counted visits |
| SBI Card Miles Elite | Charged annually | Counted visits |
Against India’s other super premium cards, the comparison usually comes down to one question: do you value uncapped lounge access more than network acceptance? AURUM SBI Card and SBI Card Miles Elite run on Visa or Mastercard and will work in more places, but both meter your lounge visits.
How to Apply
Apply on HDFC Bank’s website using the button on this page, which opens the Diners Club Black product page. You can also apply through HDFC NetBanking if you already bank with HDFC, through the mobile app, or at a branch. HDFC runs a separate eligibility check for this card, so it is worth reading that page before applying rather than submitting and hoping. Approval and your credit limit are decided by HDFC on your income and credit profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Diners Club Black annual fee waived?
Yes, on annual spends of ₹5,00,000. Below that you pay ₹10,000 plus applicable taxes, which is ₹11,800 all in, in the first year and every year afterwards.
How many lounge visits does the Diners Club Black give?
Unlimited, at more than 1,300 lounges in India and abroad, and the benefit covers add-on cardholders as well as the primary member. Very few Indian cards extend uncapped access to add-on members.
What is the forex markup on this card?
2% on all foreign currency spends, against the 3.5% most Indian credit cards charge. HDFC bills these on the statement within 60 days of the transaction.
How many Reward Points do I earn?
5 Reward Points for every ₹150 spent, with up to 10X on hotel and flight bookings through SmartBuy, 5X on Swiggy and Zomato, and 2X on weekend dining at participating restaurants.
Can I pay for a flight entirely with Reward Points?
No. HDFC caps redemption at 70% of the booking value for flights and hotels, and the remaining 30% must be paid on the credit card.
What are the milestone benefits?
Spend ₹80,000 in a calendar quarter and you receive two vouchers worth ₹500 each, redeemable at Tata Cliq, Uber, BookMyShow or Cult Fit.
Bottom Line
If you fly often and can put ₹5 lakh a year through a card, this is one of the best premium cards in India and the fee becomes irrelevant. Unlimited lounge access covering add-on members, a 2% forex markup, six golf games a quarter and ₹4,000 of milestone vouchers add up to far more than ₹11,800 for a genuine traveller. A couple who travel together extract roughly double the lounge value of any metered rival.
Do not take it if you spend under ₹5 lakh a year, because ₹11,800 is a heavy fixed cost for lounge visits you may make three times a year. And think hard about the network before applying: Diners Club is accepted in far fewer places than Visa or Mastercard, so if this would be your only card you will meet merchants who cannot take it. It belongs in a wallet as the travel card, not the everyday one.
