RBL Bank NOVA Credit Card Review: Is It Worth ₹12,500?

RBL Bank NOVA Credit Card Review

At a Glance

Joining Fee ₹12,500 + GST (₹14,750 all-in)
Annual Fee ₹12,500 + GST from the second year, nil on eligible annual spends of ₹10 lakh or more
Best Suited For High spenders who can put ₹3 lakh a quarter on one card and fly abroad a few times a year
Reward Type Reward Points worth ₹1 each, with transfers to airline partners at 2:1

The NOVA Credit Card is RBL Bank’s premium card, sitting just below its ₹50,000 Lumière. For ₹12,500 + GST you get a gift card worth the same ₹12,500, Reward Points valued at ₹1 each, a ₹10,000 gift card every quarter you spend ₹3 lakh, and a 2% forex markup.

It is a straightforward pitch: spend big and the card pays you back several times its fee. Spend modestly and you are paying ₹14,750 for a 2% card. Here is how the numbers work at different spend levels.

Rewards & Benefits

Reward rate and earn structure

Spend category Reward Points per ₹200 Value at ₹1 a point
Flight bookings and hotel stays 12 6%
All other eligible purchases 4 2%
Excluded categories (list below) 0 Nil

RBL’s product page does not mention a monthly cap on either rate, and it does not say whether the 12-point travel rate needs a particular booking channel.

Ask RBL before planning a large booking around it. These categories earn nothing: fuel and auto, education, utilities, insurance, quasi-cash, real estate and rent, wallets and service providers, government services, contracted services, cash, miscellaneous, Bills2Pay and EMI.

That is a long list, so bills, rent and insurance belong on another card.

Redemption and point value

RBL values each NOVA point at ₹1 when redeemed for its catalogue of luxury goods, travel and jewellery.

You can also move points to airline partners at 2 Reward Points to 1 partner point; RBL’s page does not name the partners. Unlike most RBL cards, NOVA pays no reward redemption fee.

At ₹1 a point, ₹1 lakh of ordinary spending earns 2,000 points, worth ₹2,000.

Welcome and milestone benefits

Welcome benefit Gift card worth ₹12,500 from Taj Experiences or Luxe Gift Card
Quarterly milestone ₹10,000 gift card of your choice on ₹3 lakh or more spent in a calendar quarter

The welcome gift card matches the joining fee, so the first year costs you only the ₹2,250 GST if you use it.

The milestone is where NOVA earns its keep. Hit ₹3 lakh in every quarter and you collect ₹40,000 in gift cards a year, an extra 3.33% on top of the 2% base rate. That same ₹12 lakh of annual spend also clears the ₹10 lakh fee waiver.

Travel, lounge and golf

Benefit Allowance
Airport lounges outside India 12 complimentary visits
Airport lounges within India 12 complimentary visits
Guest visits outside India 4 complimentary
Golf 4 rounds and 12 lessons a year
Add-on cards First two free

RBL’s page lists the lounge allowance without saying whether it resets yearly, so confirm the period with RBL. The 2% foreign transaction fee is lower than the 3.5% on most RBL cards.

Fees & Charges

Item Charge
Joining fee ₹12,500 + GST
Annual fee ₹12,500 + GST, nil on eligible annual spends of ₹10 lakh or more
Add-on cards Nil for two, ₹3,000 one-time per card beyond two
Foreign currency markup 2%
Interest (finance charge) 3.4% a month, 40.8% a year
Cash advance 2.5% of the amount, minimum ₹500
Late payment 12.5% of the total outstanding, minimum ₹5, maximum ₹1,300
Over-limit Nil
Reward redemption fee Nil
Cash payment at RBL branch ₹100
GST 18% on fees, interest and charges

The ₹10 lakh waiver needs about ₹83,400 a month. If you are chasing the quarterly milestone you clear it anyway, since ₹3 lakh a quarter is ₹12 lakh a year. “Eligible” spends exclude the categories above, so rent and bills will not help.

The charge to watch is interest. At 3.4% a month, a ₹1 lakh balance carried for one month costs about ₹3,400 plus GST, more than the points you earned on it. NOVA only works if you pay in full every month.

Eligibility & Documents Required

RBL Bank does not publish an income, age or credit score requirement for NOVA on its product page. Applications go through a dedicated NOVA form on RBL’s site, and the bank decides eligibility case by case.

Keep your PAN, an address proof such as Aadhaar or passport, and recent income proof such as salary slips, Form 16 or ITR ready, since a credit card application normally asks for these.

RBL states no minimum figure, so ask its team what it needs before you apply.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
₹12,500 welcome gift card offsets the joining fee ₹12,500 + GST fee is steep below ₹10 lakh a year

Points worth ₹1, no redemption fee Eligibility and travel-rate rules not published
2% forex, 24 lounge visits, golf Airline transfer partners not named on the page

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RBL NOVA annual fee waived?

Yes, from the second year, on eligible annual spends of ₹10 lakh or more. The joining fee of ₹12,500 + GST is not waived, but the ₹12,500 welcome gift card offsets it.

How many lounge visits does NOVA give?

12 complimentary visits at airport lounges outside India and 12 within India, plus 4 guest visits outside India. Check with RBL how often the allowance resets.

What is a NOVA Reward Point worth?

₹1 when redeemed through RBL’s catalogue. Transferred to an airline partner, 2 points become 1 partner point.

What is the forex markup on RBL NOVA?

2% on foreign currency transactions and on payments to merchants registered overseas, plus GST on the fee.

What is the minimum income for RBL NOVA?

RBL does not publish one. Eligibility is assessed after you submit the NOVA application form.

Do utility and rent payments earn points?

No. Utilities, rent, insurance, education, fuel, wallets, government payments and EMI are all excluded.

Bottom Line

Get the RBL NOVA Credit Card if you can put ₹3 lakh a quarter on it, mostly on shopping, dining and travel, and you pay in full every month.

At that level the fee is waived, the milestones add ₹40,000 a year, and the 2% forex and 24 lounge visits suit regular international trips.

Skip it if your annual spend is well under ₹10 lakh, if most of your bills fall in the excluded categories, or if you mainly want unlimited lounge access, which the HDFC super-premium cards give.
