At a Glance
| Joining Fee | ₹500 + GST (₹590 all in) |
| Annual Fee | ₹500 + GST, waived on spends of ₹50,000 in the year before renewal |
| Best Suited For | First card holders who spend regularly on BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber |
| Reward Type | CashPoints, redeemed as statement credit at 1 CashPoint = ₹0.15 |
The Freedom Credit Card is HDFC’s ₹590 starter card, and its whole pitch sits in one line: 10X CashPoints at five merchants most urban Indians already use. Away from those five, it earns 1 CashPoint per ₹200, which works out to 0.075% back. That gap between the headline rate and the base rate is the biggest thing to understand before you apply. This card rewards concentrated spending on a short list and gives you almost nothing for everything else. The 15 May 2026 terms also removed the 5X on EMI spends, so the five merchants are now the only accelerator left.
Rewards & Benefits
Reward rate and earn structure
| Spend category | Earn rate | Monthly cap |
|---|---|---|
| BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy, Uber | 10 CashPoints per ₹200 (10X) | 2,500 CashPoints per calendar month |
| All other retail spends | 1 CashPoint per ₹200 | 15,000 Reward Points per statement cycle overall |
| Utility bills (MCC 4900) | 1 CashPoint per ₹200 | 2,000 points per calendar month |
| Telecom and cable | 1 CashPoint per ₹200 | 2,000 points per calendar month |
| Grocery | 1 CashPoint per ₹200 | 1,000 points per calendar month |
| UPI spends (RuPay variant only) | 1 CashPoint per ₹200 | 500 points per calendar month |
| Fuel, rent, government, wallet and gift card loads, EMI, cash advances | No CashPoints at all | Not applicable |
Two conditions decide whether this card works for you. First, the 10X applies only to non-EMI spends at those five merchants, matched on the terminal and merchant IDs the partners share with HDFC. If a transaction is routed through SmartBuy or PayZapp instead, it drops back to 1 CashPoint per ₹200. Second, CashPoints post in multiples of ₹200, so a ₹390 Uber ride earns on ₹200 and the remaining ₹190 earns nothing. Education paid through apps such as CRED or PayTM earns no points either, though paying a school or college website directly still does.
What a CashPoint is actually worth
One CashPoint is worth ₹0.15 as statement credit, and the same ₹0.15 for flight and hotel bookings on SmartBuy, where points can cover up to 50% of the booking. So 10X returns ₹1.50 on every ₹200, which is 0.75%. Everything else returns 0.075%, or ₹7.50 on ₹10,000 spent. Hitting the 2,500 CashPoint monthly cap needs ₹50,000 a month across the five partners, and that ceiling is worth ₹375 a month, or ₹4,500 a year. A more realistic ₹8,000 a month at those merchants earns 400 CashPoints, worth ₹60. Note the floor as well: statement credit needs a minimum balance of 3,334 CashPoints, equal to ₹500, and each cashback redemption carries a ₹50 fee. Points lapse two years after they are earned.
Welcome and renewal benefits
You get 500 CashPoints on joining once the membership fee is realised, and another 500 CashPoints each year when the renewal fee is paid. At ₹0.15 each that is ₹75, against a ₹590 joining fee. If you clear ₹50,000 of eligible annual spending the renewal fee is waived, but note the catch buried in the fee waiver: cash on call, balance transfers and cash withdrawals do not count towards that ₹50,000, and neither the welcome nor the renewal points are given when the fee is waived rather than paid.
Dining, fuel and everyday protections
| Benefit | Detail |
|---|---|
| Swiggy Dineout | 10% additional discount using the coupon code HDFCCARDS |
| Fuel surcharge waiver | 1% on transactions of ₹400 to ₹5,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle |
| Interest free period | Up to 50 days from the date of purchase |
| Lost card liability | Zero liability on fraudulent transactions once reported to the 24 hour call centre |
| Airport lounge access | None on this card |
Fees & Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | ₹500 + GST |
| Renewal fee | ₹500 + GST, waived on ₹50,000 annual spends |
| Finance charge | 3.75% per month, 45% annualised |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5% of the amount or ₹500, whichever is higher |
| Foreign currency markup | 3.5% of the transaction value |
| Late payment fee | Nil up to ₹100 due, then ₹100, ₹500, ₹600, ₹750, ₹900, ₹1,100 and ₹1,300 across the slabs up to over ₹50,000 |
| Over limit charge | 2.5% of the overlimit amount, minimum ₹550 |
| Payment return charge | 2% of the payment, minimum ₹450 |
| Cashback redemption fee | ₹50 per redemption against statement balance |
| Rewards catalogue redemption | ₹99 + taxes per redemption request |
| Rent, fuel above ₹15,000, utility above ₹50,000 a month | 1% fee on the full amount, capped at ₹4,999 |
The ₹50,000 waiver is easy for most people to reach at roughly ₹4,200 a month, but only on eligible retail spends.
Cash withdrawals, balance transfers and cash on call are excluded, and so, in practice, is anything you push through rent or wallet apps, since HDFC now charges 1% on those too.
The charge that catches people out on this card is the 3.5% foreign currency markup. A ₹50,000 overseas booking costs ₹1,750 in markup plus GST on it, which no amount of 10X CashPoints will recover.
Treat the Freedom as a domestic card and keep international spending on something else. All fees attract 18% GST on top.
Eligibility & Documents Required
| Applicant | Criteria |
|---|---|
| Salaried | Indian national, age 21 to 60, net monthly income above ₹12,000 |
| Self-employed | Indian national, age 21 to 65, ITR above ₹6 lakh per annum |
The ₹12,000 monthly income floor is among the lowest HDFC publishes, which is what makes this a common first card. You will need PAN, proof of identity and address, and income proof in the form of recent salary slips or your latest ITR.
In some cases HDFC asks for document upload and a video KYC to finish the application. Approval is always at the bank’s discretion.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 0.75% back at five high-frequency merchants, on a ₹590 card | 0.075% on everything else, which is close to nothing |
| Low ₹50,000 waiver threshold and a low ₹12,000 income bar | 10X capped at 2,500 CashPoints a month, so ₹4,500 a year is the ceiling |
| Up to 50 days interest free and a 1% fuel surcharge waiver | No lounge access, and 3.5% forex markup |
| Statement credit redemption is simple at ₹0.15 a point | ₹50 fee per cashback redemption and a 3,334 point minimum |
Freedom vs Competitors
| Card | Annual fee | Waiver spend | Accelerator |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC Freedom | ₹500 + GST | ₹50,000 | 10X at 5 merchants, 2,500 points a month |
| HDFC MoneyBack+ | ₹500 + GST | ₹50,000 | 10X on partner merchants, same point value |
| HDFC Millennia | ₹1,000 + GST | ₹1 lakh | 5% cashback on select online partners |
Within HDFC’s own entry range the Freedom and the MoneyBack+ cost the same and waive at the same spend, so the choice comes down to which merchant list matches your month.
The Millennia asks double the fee and double the spend for the waiver, but returns 5% rather than 0.75% on its partner list, so it repays anyone who can clear ₹1 lakh a year. If your online spending is spread rather than concentrated, a flat cashback card will beat all three.
How to Apply
Applying online takes four steps on HDFC’s site: enter and validate your mobile number with your date of birth or PAN, confirm your details, pick the card, and submit. Existing HDFC customers can apply from the Cards section inside NetBanking, and anyone can apply at a branch.
Document upload and video KYC are sometimes required before the card is issued. Once it arrives, card controls, limits and redemptions run through NetBanking, the MobileBanking app, the MyCards portal at mycards.hdfc.bank.in, PayZapp, or WhatsApp banking on 7070022222.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the HDFC Freedom Credit Card annual fee waived?
Yes, on ₹50,000 of eligible spends in the year before the renewal date, which is about ₹4,200 a month. Cash withdrawals, balance transfers and cash on call do not count. Without the waiver the fee is ₹500 plus 18% GST, so ₹590.
Which merchants give 10X CashPoints on the Freedom card?
BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber, at 10 CashPoints per ₹200 on non-EMI spends. The 10X earning is capped at 2,500 CashPoints per calendar month, and spends beyond that cap earn nothing extra.
What is 1 CashPoint worth on the Freedom card?
₹0.15 as statement credit, or the same ₹0.15 towards flights and hotels on SmartBuy where points can cover up to half the booking. You need at least 3,334 CashPoints, equal to ₹500, before you can redeem against your statement.
Does the HDFC Freedom Credit Card give airport lounge access?
No. The card’s benefits list carries no domestic or international lounge programme. If lounge visits matter to you, this is the wrong card at this price point.
What is the minimum salary for the HDFC Freedom Credit Card?
Net monthly income above ₹12,000 for salaried applicants aged 21 to 60. Self-employed applicants aged 21 to 65 need an ITR above ₹6 lakh a year. Meeting the floor does not guarantee approval.
Do rent and fuel payments earn CashPoints on the Freedom card?
No. Fuel, rent, government transactions, wallet and gift card loads, EMI transactions and cash advances all earn zero CashPoints. Rent also attracts a 1% fee, and fuel transactions above ₹15,000 attract 1% on the whole amount.
Bottom Line
Take the Freedom if your month genuinely runs through Swiggy, Uber, BigBasket, BookMyShow and OYO, and you can clear ₹50,000 a year so the fee disappears. At ₹20,000 a month across those five you collect 1,000 CashPoints a month, worth ₹1,800 a year on a card that then costs nothing. That is a fair return for a first card with a ₹12,000 income bar.
Skip it if your spending is spread across many merchants, because 0.075% on the rest is not a reward programme, it is a rounding error. Skip it too if you travel, since there is no lounge access and the 3.5% forex markup is punitive. Anyone wanting flat cashback with no merchant list to memorise should compare the Cashback SBI Card, online shoppers should look at SimplyCLICK, and readers who want the cheapest possible everyday card should read our SBI SimplySAVE review before paying any fee at all.
