The HDFC Bank Teachers Platinum Credit Card was built for one profession and one habit: a modest monthly spend, a low fee and a small thank-you on Teacher’s Day.

It pays 500 Reward Points every 5 September, offers up to 3X points on a capped base, and costs ₹590 a year unless you cross ₹50,000 of spends.

HDFC’s own page now says that sourcing of this card has been stopped, so you cannot apply for it today. Existing cardholders keep every benefit. This review explains what that means in rupees and whether it is worth holding on to.

Rewards & Benefits

Reward rate and earn structure

Benefit What HDFC publishes Cap
Teacher’s Day bonus 500 Reward Points every 5 September Once a year
Spend rewards Up to 3X Reward Points on spends of ₹200 2,400 Reward Points per year
Fuel surcharge waiver 1% on transactions of ₹400 to ₹5,000 ₹250 per statement cycle
Add-on cards Up to 3 lifetime free 3 cards

The 2,400 point annual cap is the number that defines this card. It means the “up to 3X” headline stops paying after a fixed amount each year, so a heavy spender gains nothing from the extra rate once the cap is reached.

HDFC’s page does not state the rupee value of one point for this card, so we have not put a value on it. Check the redemption screen in NetBanking, which shows the live value before you confirm.

The Teacher’s Day bonus

Every 5 September the card credits 500 Reward Points, and this is the only reward that needs no spending at all.

Against a ₹590 annual cost, it recovers part of the fee on its own, which is a useful floor if the card sits in a drawer for most of the year.

HDFC’s page does not spell out whether this bonus counts towards the 2,400 point spend cap, so read the card’s terms before assuming the two stack.

Everyday perks through PayZapp

Link the card to PayZapp and HDFC lists extra CashBack on utility bills and mobile recharges, plus ₹1,000 CashBack on in-app shopping across 200+ brands.

The page gives no per-bill rate, so treat these as offers that can change rather than a fixed earn. Swipe to Pay also lets you pay without entering an OTP.

Travel and lounge access

HDFC’s page lists no airport lounge access, no travel insurance and no foreign currency markup for this card. A benefit that is not listed should not be assumed, so do not plan trips around it. It is an everyday-spend card, not a travel card.

Fees & Charges

Joining fee Not published on the product page
Annual / renewal fee ₹500 + GST (₹590 at 18% GST)
Fee waiver ₹50,000 of spends in the year, effective 15 February 2019
Interest on unpaid balance 3.6% per month, 43.2% a year, effective 1 September 2020
Interest free period Up to 50 days from the date of purchase
Fuel surcharge waiver 1% on ₹400 to ₹5,000, maximum ₹250 per cycle

The waiver is the easy part. ₹50,000 a year is about ₹4,170 a month, which a household covers with groceries, a phone bill and school supplies.

Route those through the card and the ₹590 never leaves your account. Because the waiver counts spends, not points, put recurring bills such as electricity and mobile on the card from the first month rather than chasing the target in March.

The charge that catches people out is interest. At 3.6% a month, a ₹10,000 balance carried for one month costs ₹360, which is more than 60% of the annual fee in a single cycle.

Fuel is a close second: to collect the full ₹250 cycle waiver you need ₹25,000 of eligible fuel spends, so it is a small perk, not a reason to use the card.

Eligibility & Documents Required

This card is no longer sold, so there is no live application to qualify for, and HDFC’s page publishes no income or age criteria for it. If you now want a card from the bank, HDFC’s general rules apply: applicants must be at least 21 years old, Indian nationals, and either salaried or self-employed.

Standard documents are an identity and address proof such as Aadhaar, passport, Voter ID or driving licence, and income proof such as PAN with salary slips or the last three years of income tax returns.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
₹500 + GST fee, waived at ₹50,000 of yearly spends Closed to new applicants
500 Reward Points every Teacher’s Day Spend rewards capped at 2,400 points a year
Up to 3 lifetime free add-on cards No lounge access or travel cover listed
Up to 50 interest free days 3.6% a month interest is expensive

Teachers Platinum vs Competitors

If you are choosing a card today, you will be comparing alternatives, not this one. Inside HDFC, the MoneyBack+ is the closest low-fee option: it also costs ₹500 + GST and also waives the fee at ₹50,000 of yearly spends, but it pays 2.5% back at five named merchants.

Among other banks, look for a lifetime free card from your salary account bank, since a card with no fee beats a waivable one for light spenders.

How to Apply

You cannot. HDFC states that sourcing of the Teachers Platinum Credit Card has been stopped. Existing cardholders can manage the card through NetBanking, the MobileBanking app, MyCards, PayZapp or WhatsApp Banking, and can switch online, contactless and international usage on or off in a few taps.

If you want a similar card, apply for a current HDFC product through the bank’s website and compare fees first.

Does the card give airport lounge access?

What is the interest rate on the Teachers Platinum card?

Interest is 3.6% per month, which is 43.2% a year, on any balance carried beyond the due date. Pay the full statement amount to avoid it.

Bottom Line

Keep the Teachers Platinum if you already hold it, spend about ₹50,000 a year on it and enjoy the 500 point Teacher’s Day credit.

At ₹590 with an easy waiver, it costs almost nothing to hold. Skip it if you want to buy a new card, since you cannot, and skip it as a main card if you travel, spend heavily or sometimes carry a balance.

The 2,400 point cap, no listed lounge access and 43.2% interest all work against that profile. Light-spending teachers should check the fee each renewal and switch to a lifetime free card if the waiver is missed.
