The SBI Card Miles PRIME is the middle card in SBI’s three-card Miles series, sitting between SBI Card MILES at ₹1,499 and SBI Card Miles Elite at ₹4,999. It earns Travel Credits that transfer into airline miles and hotel points at 1:1, and it charges a 2.5% forex markup instead of the 3.5% most Indian cards apply. The whole card turns on one number: ₹8 lakh. Cross it in a membership year and 10,000 bonus Travel Credits land in your account, and the return becomes genuinely good. Stay below it and you are paying ₹3,539 for a 1% card with decent lounge access.

Rewards & Benefits

Reward rate and earn structure

The card earns Travel Credits, SBI’s transferable currency for the Miles series:

Spend category Earn rate Value back at 1:1 transfer
Travel spends (specified MCCs) 4 Travel Credits per ₹200 2%
All other eligible spends 2 Travel Credits per ₹200 1%

“Travel” here is defined by merchant category code, not by booking channel. Airlines, hotels, travel agencies, car rentals, railways and cruise lines all qualify, and you are never forced through a captive SBI booking portal to get the accelerated rate. SBI’s published terms for this card do not state a monthly ceiling on Travel Credit earning.

What earns nothing at all. Travel Credits are not awarded on rent, fuel, utility bills, e-wallet loads, cash withdrawals, balance transfers, Flexipay, Encash or cashback transactions. In a typical Indian household, rent and utilities are two of the largest recurring outflows, and both are dead weight on this card.

Redemption and point value

Redemption route Value per Travel Credit
Transfer to airline miles or hotel points ₹1.00
Travel bookings through SBI Card ₹0.50
Shop & Smile product catalogue ₹0.25

The spread between the top row and the bottom row is 4x, and it decides whether this card is worth owning. Transfer to a partner and your travel rate is 2%. Redeem into the product catalogue and the same spending returns 0.5%, which is worse than a free cashback card. Minimum redemption is 2,000 Travel Credits, credits expire 24 months from the date they are earned, and a ₹99 redemption fee applies to physical products, statement credit and physically delivered vouchers.

Welcome and milestone benefits

The welcome benefit is 3,000 Travel Credits on ₹60,000 of spending within 60 days of card issuance, credited once the joining fee is paid. At transfer value that is ₹3,000 against a ₹3,539 all-in fee, so year one is close to free if you can hit the target with eligible spending.

Milestone Benefit
Every ₹1 lakh spent 1 extra domestic lounge visit, capped at 12 extra visits per membership year
₹8 lakh annual spend 10,000 bonus Travel Credits
₹10 lakh annual spend Annual fee reversed

At ₹8 lakh a year, split ₹2.5 lakh travel and ₹5.5 lakh other, you earn 5,000 + 5,500 + 10,000 milestone credits, or 20,500 Travel Credits worth ₹20,500 in partner miles. Take off the ₹3,539 fee and that is ₹16,961 net, an effective 2.12%.

At ₹4 lakh a year, split ₹1 lakh travel and ₹3 lakh other, you earn 5,000 Travel Credits worth ₹5,000. After the fee that is ₹1,461, an effective 0.37%. That single comparison is the argument for and against this card.

Lounge access and insurance

Lounge programme Complimentary visits
Domestic airport lounges 8 per year, maximum 2 per quarter
Domestic, earned on spending Up to 12 more, at 1 per ₹1 lakh spent
International (Priority Pass) 4 per year, maximum 2 per quarter

Priority Pass membership is worth USD 99 and is complimentary for the first two years only. Once your four international visits are used, each further visit costs USD 27 plus taxes, and that applies to guests too. Twenty domestic visits a year at full milestone earning is a genuinely strong allowance for a ₹2,999 card.

Cover Amount
Flight cancellation Up to 6 per year, ₹3,500 each
Lost card liability Up to ₹1 lakh
Loss of check-in baggage Up to ₹72,000
Delay of check-in baggage ₹7,500
Loss of travel documents Up to ₹12,500
Baggage damage Up to ₹5,000

Fees & Charges

Charge Amount
Joining fee ₹2,999 + GST (₹3,539 all-in)
Renewal fee, per annum ₹2,999 + GST, reversed on ₹10 lakh annual spend
Add-on card fee Nil
Foreign currency markup 2.5%
Dynamic currency conversion 2.5% on transactions of ₹1,000 and above
Finance charges Up to 3.75% per month, 45% per annum
Cash advance fee 2.5% of the amount or ₹500, whichever is higher
Late payment charge Nil up to ₹100 outstanding, rising in slabs to ₹1,300 above ₹50,000
Overlimit fee 2.5% of the overlimit amount or ₹600, whichever is higher
Payment dishonour fee 2% of the payment amount, minimum ₹500
Rent payment processing fee ₹199 per transaction
Utility payment fee 1% if utility spends cross ₹50,000 in a billing cycle
Wallet load fee 1% on every wallet load above ₹1,000
Fuel surcharge waiver 1% on transactions of ₹500 to ₹4,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle

Hitting the ₹10 lakh waiver. That works out to ₹83,333 a month of net retail spending, measured over the 365 days before your fee billing date. Reversals are subtracted, and cash advances do not count. For most cardholders the honest answer is that the fee will not be waived, so treat ₹3,539 a year as a fixed cost and judge the card on whether the rewards clear it.

The charge that catches people out. Rent, utilities and wallet loads are the worst possible spends on this card, because they are hit twice. They earn no Travel Credits at all, and they attract their own fees: ₹199 on every rent transaction, 1% on utility bills once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000. Route those payments to a different card.

Real travel insurance, including flight cancellation cover Catalogue redemption drops the value of a credit to ₹0.25
Welcome benefit nearly covers the first year’s fee No dining, movie or lifestyle benefits at all

SBI Card Miles PRIME vs Competitors

Miles PRIME SBI Card MILES Miles Elite
Annual fee ₹2,999 + GST ₹1,499 + GST ₹4,999 + GST
Fee waiver ₹10 lakh spend ₹6 lakh spend ₹15 lakh spend
Travel earn 4 credits / ₹200 (2%) 2 credits / ₹200 (1%) 6 credits / ₹200 (3%)
Other earn 2 credits / ₹200 (1%) 1 credit / ₹200 (0.5%) 2 credits / ₹200 (1%)
Forex markup 2.5% 3% 1.99%
Welcome benefit 3,000 credits on ₹60,000 / 60 days 1,500 credits on ₹30,000 / 60 days 5,000 credits on ₹1 lakh / 60 days
Top milestone 10,000 credits at ₹8 lakh 5,000 credits at ₹5 lakh 20,000 credits at ₹12 lakh

The series is priced almost exactly to the spending it expects. SBI Card MILES is the right pick below ₹5 lakh a year, where its ₹6 lakh waiver is at least conceivable and its ₹1,499 fee is easy to clear. Miles PRIME owns the ₹6 lakh to ₹12 lakh band, because the ₹8 lakh milestone is reachable and doubles your effective return. Miles Elite only makes sense above ₹12 lakh, where its 20,000-credit milestone and 1.99% forex justify ₹2,000 more in fee.

What is the minimum salary for the SBI Card Miles PRIME? SBI Card does not publish an income requirement for this card. You need to be an Indian resident aged 18 or above with income proof and a clean repayment record.

What is a Travel Credit worth? ₹1 when transferred to an airline or hotel partner, ₹0.50 against travel bookings made through SBI Card, and ₹0.25 in the Shop & Smile catalogue. Only the first route makes the card’s economics work.

Do Travel Credits expire? Yes, 24 months from the date they are earned. The minimum you can redeem in one go is 2,000 credits.

Does the SBI Card Miles PRIME earn on rent and utility bills? No. Rent, fuel, utilities, wallet loads, EMI conversions, cash withdrawals and balance transfers are all excluded, and rent, utilities and wallet loads carry separate fees on top.

Bottom Line

The SBI Card Miles PRIME is a well-judged middle card. The 2.5% forex markup, the twenty possible domestic lounge visits and the 1:1 transfer partners are all real, and the ₹8 lakh milestone is the rare Indian milestone that is both reachable and worth reaching. At that level of spending you are looking at roughly 2.12% back in airline miles, which is competitive for the fee.

Skip this card if your annual card spend is under about ₹6 lakh, if the bulk of it is rent, fuel and utility bills, or if you intend to redeem into the product catalogue rather than transfer to airlines. In all three cases you will earn well under 1% and pay ₹3,539 for the privilege. A no-fee cashback card will serve you better.
