The Standard Chartered Smart Credit Card is a plain cashback card. You get 2% back on online spends and 1% on everything else, with no partner brands to remember and no reward points to convert.
The fee is ₹499 a year, and the bank reverses it once you spend ₹1.2 lakh in a year. Two extras set it apart from other entry cards: a 90-day window at the start where you only have to pay the minimum due without being charged interest on purchases, and a 3-month EMI at 0.99% a month. The catch sits in the redemption rules, which we explain below.
Rewards & Benefits
Reward rate and earn structure
| Spend | Cashback | Cap per statement cycle | Spend needed to hit the cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online | 2% | ₹1,000 | ₹50,000 |
| Offline and other spends | 1% | ₹500 | ₹50,000 |
| Fuel, cash advances, fees and charges | None | Not applicable | Not applicable |
Whether a purchase counts as online or offline is decided by how the card network tags it, not by you. Bill payments made through BillDesk or StanChart Bill Pay earn cashback only for telecom and utility billers (electricity, water and gas).
Since 21 August 2024 the two caps apply to you as a client, so add-on cards share your ₹1,000 and ₹500 limits rather than getting their own. The card earns no reward points at all; cashback is the only currency.
Redemption and real value
Cashback is not credited automatically. It builds up as a balance on the 360° Rewards portal, and you redeem it yourself as a credit to your card account.
Since 1 May 2024 you need at least ₹2,500 of cashback to redeem, and you can redeem only in steps of ₹1,000 above that (₹2,500, ₹3,500, ₹4,500 and so on). The credit lands within 3 working days.
Here is what that means in practice. Spend ₹15,000 a month, two thirds online, and you earn ₹200 online plus ₹50 offline, so ₹250 a month. You reach the ₹2,500 minimum after 10 months. A cashback rate of 1.67% is fine; waiting most of a year to touch it is the real cost.
Extended interest-free period
For the first 90 days after the card is issued, you can pay only the minimum amount due on your first three statements without being charged interest on retail purchases.
From the fourth statement you must clear the full outstanding by its due date, or interest is charged on that whole amount. Miss even one minimum payment in this window and the benefit is gone, a late fee applies, and interest runs on the full balance.
The window does not cover cash withdrawals or anything converted to EMI, and you cannot change your statement date during it.
EMI and other features
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Kuch Bhi on EMI | 0.99% a month for a 3-month tenure, nil processing fee, on transactions of ₹2,000 or more |
| Add-on cards | Lifetime free, minimum age 18 |
| Network | Visa |
| Lounge access, insurance, milestone gifts | None published for this card |
At its best the card pays ₹18,000 a year, which is the bank’s own figure for someone who spends ₹50,000 online and ₹50,000 offline every month. Most people will earn a fraction of that.
Fees & Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | ₹499 + GST, waived as a special offer (not for existing Standard Chartered cardholders) |
| Annual fee (year 2 onwards) | ₹499 + GST, reversed on ₹1,20,000 spends in the preceding year |
| Interest | 3.75% a month (45% a year) |
| Foreign currency transactions | 3.5% |
| Cash advance | 3% of the amount, minimum ₹300, plus 3.75% a month interest |
| Late payment | Nil up to ₹100 outstanding, ₹100 up to ₹500, ₹500 up to ₹5,000, ₹700 up to ₹10,000, ₹1,200 above ₹10,000 |
| Over-limit | 2.5% of the over-limit amount, minimum ₹500 |
| Rent payments | 1% processing fee |
| Fuel | No cashback and no surcharge waiver; the surcharge (₹10 or 1%, whichever is higher) is passed on |
| Cash payment at a branch | ₹299 |
GST at 18% is added to every fee and to interest. The ₹1.2 lakh renewal waiver works out to ₹10,000 a month on the primary card.
The bank checks your spends at the end of the year and reverses the fee within 60 days of charging it, so expect to see ₹589 on a statement before it comes back.
The charge that catches people out is the 3.5% foreign currency fee. Use this card abroad or on a website billed overseas and you pay 3.5% plus GST to earn 2% or less back, a clear loss on every transaction.
Eligibility & Documents Required
You must be 21 to 65 years old with a stable monthly income, and live in a city where Standard Chartered issues credit cards.
The bank does not publish a minimum salary for this card. Keep ready a photo ID, PAN, address proof such as Aadhaar or a passport, and one photograph.
Salaried applicants need the latest salary slip; self-employed applicants need the latest income tax return and business continuity proof.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| 2% on all online spends, no merchant list | ₹2,500 minimum before you can redeem |
| Fee reversed at ₹1.2 lakh a year | Caps shared with add-on cards |
| 90 days of interest-free minimum payments | 3.5% forex fee |

Standard Chartered Smart vs Competitors
| Card | Annual fee | Fee waived at | Best rate and cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| SC Smart | ₹499 + GST | ₹1.2 lakh | 2% online, ₹1,000 a cycle |
| SimplyCLICK SBI Card | ₹499 + GST | ₹1 lakh | 2.5% at eleven partner brands |
| Cashback SBI Card | ₹999 + GST | ₹2 lakh | 5% online, ₹2,000 a cycle |
SimplyCLICK pays more, but only at its partner brands, and drops to 1.25% elsewhere online. Cashback SBI pays more than double on online spends and credits cashback without a redemption step, but costs twice as much and needs ₹2 lakh for the waiver.
Smart is the better fit for someone who wants one flat rate everywhere at the lowest fee.
How to Apply
Standard Chartered asks applicants for the Smart card to visit the nearest branch or call its contact centre. Have your PAN, address proof and income documents ready, and check first that your city is on the bank’s sourcing list.
Once the card arrives, pay at least the minimum due on each of the first three statements to keep the 90-day interest-free benefit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Standard Chartered Smart Credit Card annual fee waived?
Yes, the ₹499 + GST renewal fee is reversed if you spend ₹1,20,000 or more in the preceding year. The joining fee is currently waived as a special offer, except for people who already hold a Standard Chartered credit card.
How much cashback does the SC Smart card give?
2% on online spends, capped at ₹1,000 a statement cycle, and 1% on other spends, capped at ₹500. Fuel and cash withdrawals earn nothing.
When can I redeem SC Smart cashback?
Only once your balance reaches ₹2,500, and then in steps of ₹1,000. You redeem it on the 360° Rewards portal and it is credited to your card within 3 working days.
Does the SC Smart card have lounge access?
No. Standard Chartered does not list any airport lounge access for the Smart card.
What is the forex markup on SC Smart?
3.5% on every foreign currency transaction, plus GST. That is more than the cashback you earn, so use another card abroad.
What is the interest rate on SC Smart?
3.75% a month, or 45% a year, after the first 90 days. Cash withdrawals are charged 3.75% a month from day one.
Bottom Line
Get the Standard Chartered Smart if you spend at least ₹10,000 a month on a card, much of it online, and want one flat cashback rate with a fee that disappears.
The 90-day minimum payment window also helps if you have a large planned purchase soon after getting the card.
Skip it if you spend less than about ₹8,000 a month, because the ₹2,500 redemption minimum will hold your cashback hostage for over a year.
Skip it too if you travel abroad or buy from foreign websites, or if most of your online shopping happens at a few brands that another card rewards at 5%.
