Best Suited For Light spenders and occasional flyers who want a low-cost entry into air miles
Reward Type Kotak Air Miles, worth ₹1 each on flight and hotel bookings

The Kotak Air Credit Card is Kotak Mahindra Bank’s entry-level travel card, priced at ₹999 + GST.

It turns everyday spends into Air Miles that you can use to book flights and hotels at ₹1 per mile, or transfer to airline and hotel programmes such as Air India Maharaja Club and Marriott Bonvoy.

Bookings through Kotak’s own travel portal, Kotak Unbox, earn three times the base rate. You also get 1,000 bonus miles each year and up to 4 domestic lounge visits. This review works out what those miles are really worth and where the conditions bite.

Rewards & Benefits

Reward rate and earn structure

Spend Air Miles per ₹100 Value at ₹1 a mile
Flights and hotels booked on Kotak Unbox 3, accelerated miles capped at 5,000 a statement cycle 3%
All other purchases 1, no cap 1%
Utility, telecom, insurance, education, government, rent, fuel, wallet loads, gaming, EMI and cash 0 Nil

Kotak says the 5,000-mile cap equals ₹2.5 lakh of bookings in a cycle. Beyond the cap, further bookings still earn 1 mile per ₹100. Miles are earned in whole ₹100 steps, so a ₹99 transaction or the ₹50 left over on a ₹350 bill earns nothing.

Redemption and point value

Redemption Value
Flights and hotels on Kotak Unbox 1 mile = ₹1, up to 80% of the booking
Instant vouchers 1 mile = ₹0.50
British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Air France, United, Qatar, Accor 2 Air Miles = 1 partner point
Air India Maharaja Club, Marriott Bonvoy 3 Air Miles = 1 partner point

You need 500 miles to redeem on Kotak Unbox and 1,000 to transfer, and transfers are capped at 1,00,000 miles a calendar year.

Miles expire 3 years after you earn them. Spend ₹50,000 a year on Unbox bookings and ₹2 lakh on everything else and you earn 3,500 miles, worth ₹3,500 against a flight, or ₹4,500 with the renewal bonus.

Welcome and renewal benefits

Benefit Condition
1,000 bonus Air Miles (worth ₹1,000) Credited within 120 days of issuance, once the joining fee is paid
1,000 bonus Air Miles every year Credited within 30 days of paying the annual fee

Used on a flight, each 1,000-mile bonus recovers ₹1,000 of the ₹1,179 you pay, so the fee costs you a net ₹179 a year.

Lounge and fuel

Benefit Allowance
Domestic airport lounge 4 visits a year, maximum 2 a quarter, primary cardholder only
Lounge spend condition ₹60,000 spent in the previous calendar quarter
International lounge Not offered
Fuel surcharge waiver 1% on ₹500 to ₹5,000, up to ₹3,500 an anniversary year

A ₹2 validation charge is billed each time you use a lounge. Fuel spends earn no miles.

Fees & Charges

Charge Amount
Joining fee ₹999 + GST
Annual fee ₹999 + GST
Interest rate 3.75% a month (45% a year)
Cash withdrawal 2.5%, ₹500 minimum
Late payment Nil up to ₹100 due, then ₹100 to ₹1,300; ₹750 on ₹5,001 to ₹10,000 due
Over-limit ₹500
Forex markup 3.5%
Rent 1% of the amount
Wallet loads above ₹10,000 a cycle 1%
Fuel above ₹35,000 a cycle 1%
Utility above ₹50,000 a cycle 1%

GST at 18% applies to all fees and interest. On the fee waiver, Kotak’s own documents disagree. The Key Fact Statement lists an annual fee waiver on ₹2.5 lakh of retail spends a year, excluding rent, wallet, utility, education and transport.

The card page currently says no waiver is available. Do not plan around the waiver until Kotak confirms it for your card.

The charge that catches people out is the 3.5% forex markup. Foreign spends earn only 1 mile per ₹100, so every purchase abroad costs you about 2.5% net.

Eligibility & Documents Required

Kotak does not publish a minimum income or age for the Air card on its product page, and issuance is at the bank’s discretion.

Expect to provide your PAN, Aadhaar or another address proof, and recent salary slips or income tax returns. Existing Kotak credit cardholders can also upgrade, and points from the old card move across.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
1% base return with no cap Utility, insurance, rent and fuel earn nothing
Renewal miles cancel most of the fee Lounge visits need ₹60,000 a quarter
8 airline and hotel transfer partners No cashback or statement credit redemption
3% back on Kotak Unbox travel 3.5% forex markup, no international lounge

Kotak Air vs Competitors

Feature Kotak Air Kotak Air Plus AU Ananta
Annual fee ₹999 ₹3,000 ₹2,000
Base rate 1 mile per ₹100 (1%) 2 miles per ₹100 (2%) 2 points per ₹100 (0.5%)

Welcome and renewal 1,000 miles each 2,500 miles each 8,000 points on joining
Lounge 4 domestic a year 4 domestic, 2 international a year Up to 4 domestic a quarter

Fees are plus GST. Air Plus doubles the base rate and adds international lounges. After renewal miles it costs about ₹861 a year more than Air, so its extra 1% wins once your yearly spends pass roughly ₹86,000.

Our Kotak Cashback+ review covers the bank’s option for people who would rather have cashback than miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kotak Air annual fee waived?

Not reliably. The Key Fact Statement mentions a waiver on ₹2.5 lakh of yearly spends, but the card page says no waiver is available. You do get 1,000 Air Miles back each time you pay the ₹999 + GST fee.

How many lounge visits does Kotak Air give?

4 domestic visits a year, at most 2 in a quarter. Each quarter’s access needs ₹60,000 of spends in the previous calendar quarter.

What is a Kotak Air Mile worth?

₹1 when used for flights and hotels on Kotak Unbox, and ₹0.50 for vouchers. Transfers to partners run at 2:1 or 3:1.

Can I transfer Kotak Air Miles to Air India?

Yes, at 3 Air Miles to 1 Maharaja Club point. The minimum transfer is 1,000 miles and the yearly cap is 1,00,000 miles.

Do Kotak Air Miles expire?

Yes, 3 years from the date they are credited.

Bottom Line

Get the Kotak Air if you spend less than about ₹1 lakh a year, want a cheap first step into air miles and book the odd flight or hotel online.

The renewal miles bring the real yearly cost down to about ₹179, so even light use covers it. Skip it if your big monthly spends are utility bills, insurance or rent, which earn nothing, or if you want cashback rather than miles.

Skip it too if you spend more than ₹1 lakh a year, because Kotak Air Plus returns twice as much on every rupee and more than covers its higher fee.
