At a Glance
| Joining Fee | ₹1,499 + GST (₹1,769 all-in) |
| Annual Fee | ₹1,499 + GST, reversed on annual spends of ₹2 lakh |
| Best Suited For | Frequent train travellers who book AC classes on the IRCTC app or website |
| Reward Type | Reward Points credited to your IRCTC loyalty account |
Launched in March 2025, the IRCTC SBI Card Premier is the upgraded version of SBI’s railway card, and it is built around one number: up to 10% value back on AC train tickets booked through IRCTC.
If you take the train often, nothing else in the Indian market returns that much on rail fares. The catch is that everything good about this card lives inside the IRCTC ecosystem.
Points land in your IRCTC loyalty account, not your SBI account, and they are spent on IRCTC. Outside that world the card earns a thin 1 Reward Point per ₹125, and there is no lounge access at all.
Rewards & Benefits
Reward rate and earn structure
| Spend category | Earn rate | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| AC1, AC2, AC3, Executive Chair Car and Chair Car booked on IRCTC app or website | Up to 10% value back as Reward Points | None published |
| Air tickets on air.irctc.co.in | 5% back | None published |
| E-catering on ecatering.irctc.co.in | 5% back | None published |
| Dining and standing instructions on utility spends | 3 Reward Points per ₹125 | None published |
| All other non-fuel retail | 1 Reward Point per ₹125 | None published |
Two things to note before you count on the 10%. It applies only to the AC classes listed above, so sleeper and general class bookings do not qualify.
And SBI calculates it on the base fare, though helpfully that includes every co-traveller on the same booking, not just yours. A family of four booking AC3 earns on all four fares.
Redemption and what a point is worth
SBI describes the welcome benefit as “1,500 reward points worth ₹1,500”, which puts one Reward Point at ₹1 when redeemed inside IRCTC.
That is an unusually clean rate, and it is what makes the 10% figure meaningful rather than marketing.
Points transfer to your IRCTC loyalty account and are redeemed on the IRCTC website or mobile app, and the app redemption route is Android only. If your loyalty account is blocked, inactive or suspended, points stop transferring, so keep it live.
Welcome and milestone benefits
| Benefit | Requirement |
|---|---|
| 1,500 Reward Points worth ₹1,500 | Payment of the first annual fee |
| 2,500 Reward Points | ₹50,000 annual travel spend |
| 5,000 Reward Points | ₹1,00,000 annual travel spend |
| Annual fee reversal | ₹2,00,000 total annual spend |
The welcome points alone are worth ₹1,500 against a ₹1,769 all-in joining cost, so year one is close to free. Milestones are measured on travel spends only, against a published list of eligible merchant category codes, and are credited within 45 days.
Transaction charge savings and cover
| Railway booking transaction charge saved | 1% on irctc.co.in |
| Airline booking transaction charge saved | 1.8% on air.irctc.co.in |
| Fraud liability cover | Up to ₹1,00,000 |
The transaction charge saving is separate from the reward points and stacks on top, which is easy to miss. IRCTC levies a payment gateway charge on every booking, and this card removes it.
Fees & Charges
| Joining fee | ₹1,499 + GST |
| All-in first year cost | ₹1,769 |
| Renewal fee, per annum | ₹1,499 + GST from the second year |
| Spend needed for fee reversal | ₹2,00,000 in the card year |
| Add-on card fee, per annum | Nil |
GST of 18% applies on top, so the real figure is ₹1,769. Reaching ₹2,00,000 in a year means about ₹16,700 a month across all spending, not just rail. Since the card earns only 0.8% outside IRCTC at the base rate, chasing the reversal with unrelated spending is usually a poor trade.
Better to treat the reversal as a bonus if your ordinary spending already clears it, and judge the card purely on rail value if it does not. The reversal is credited within 30 days of the annual fee being charged.
The thing that catches people out is that fuel earns nothing here. The base rate explicitly excludes fuel, and unlike most SBI cards in this price band there is no fuel surcharge waiver listed either. Interest rates, forex markup and cash advance charges are set out in SBI Card’s Most Important Terms and Conditions for this product.
Eligibility & Documents Required
SBI does not publish an income floor, age band or credit score cut-off for this card, and the eligibility that matters is checked at application.
The card is open for online application on SBI Card’s website. Keep the standard set ready: PAN, proof of identity, proof of current address, and either your recent salary slips or the last two years of income tax returns if you are self-employed. You will also need an active IRCTC account, since that is where your reward points are delivered.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Up to 10% value back on AC class rail bookings | No airport lounge access at all |
| Points valued at ₹1 each inside IRCTC | Base rate of 1 point per ₹125 is weak outside IRCTC |
| Welcome points worth ₹1,500 cover most of the joining fee | Sleeper and general class bookings do not earn the 10% |
| 1% rail and 1.8% air transaction charges saved | Points are locked inside the IRCTC ecosystem |
IRCTC SBI Card Premier vs Competitors
| Card | Annual fee | Rail value back |
|---|---|---|
| IRCTC SBI Card Premier | ₹1,499, reversed at ₹2 lakh | Up to 10% on AC classes |
| IRCTC SBI Card | Lower | Lower tier of the same programme |
| SBI Card Miles | Charged annually | None, it is an air travel card |
The honest comparison is against the entry IRCTC SBI Card rather than any general travel card. If you book AC classes regularly, the Premier’s higher rail rate repays the fee difference quickly. If you fly more than you take the train, SBI Card Miles is the better fit, and it comes with lounge access this card lacks.
How to Apply

Approval and the final credit limit are decided by SBI Card on your income and credit profile, so treat the listed benefits as what the card offers rather than a guarantee of issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the IRCTC SBI Card Premier annual fee waived?
It is reversed at ₹2,00,000 of annual spend, not waived up front. Below that you pay ₹1,499 + GST, which is ₹1,769 all in, and the reversal lands within 30 days of the fee being charged.
How much do I actually get back on train tickets?
Up to 10% value back as reward points on AC1, AC2, AC3, Executive Chair Car and Chair Car booked on the IRCTC app or website. It is calculated on the base fare and includes every co-traveller on the same booking.
Does the IRCTC SBI Card Premier give lounge access?
No. SBI lists no domestic or international airport lounge visits on this card, which is unusual at this fee level and the single biggest gap in the product.
What is one Reward Point worth?
₹1 when redeemed inside IRCTC. SBI describes the welcome benefit as 1,500 reward points worth ₹1,500, which sets the rate.
Do sleeper class bookings earn the 10%?
No. Only the AC classes and chair car classes named on SBI’s page qualify. Sleeper and general class bookings fall outside the accelerated rate.
Where do my reward points go?
They are transferred to your IRCTC loyalty account and redeemed on the IRCTC website or Android app. If that account is blocked, inactive or suspended, the transfer stops.
Bottom Line
If you and your family book AC train tickets on IRCTC several times a year, this is the best card in India for that specific job, and the numbers are not close. Welcome points worth ₹1,500 cover most of year one, the fee reverses at ₹2 lakh, and 10% back on AC fares is a genuine return rather than a headline rate hedged with caps.
Do not buy it as a general purpose card. Outside IRCTC it earns 0.8% at the base rate, it pays nothing on fuel, and it gives you no lounge access whatsoever, which cards at half this fee routinely include. If your travel is mostly by air, or if you take the train once or twice a year, your money is better spent elsewhere in the SBI range.
